Galerie Marguo is pleased to announce its representation of Japanese artist Shinya Azuma, in collaboration with COHJU art gallery in Kyoto.
Born in 1994 and based in Kyoto, Azuma is known for his bold, unembellished compositions that merge expressive brushwork, unexpected color palettes, and an ironic sense of humor. His paintings transform everyday encounters—from fleeting moments and natural landscapes to news broadcasts—into visceral, perplexing reflections on contemporary life.
Azuma’s practice explores themes ranging from wealth inequality to personal intimacy, offering a fragmented yet revealing lens on human nature. Infused with satire and self-deprecating humor, his distinctive visual language mirrors the way modern culture absorbs and distorts information. In recent years, he has expanded his practice beyond painting, incorporating wood and ceramics to further push the boundaries of his artistic expression.
Azuma’s first solo exhibition in Asia outside of Japan, Breaking Out: Shinya Azuma’s Guide to Surviving the Absurd City, opens on 18 March 2025, at Bao Room by Bao Foundation, Shanghai. This follows his European solo debut, YOROSHIKU 夜露死苦, presented by Galerie Marguo in April 2024 in Paris.
Galerie Marguo is delighted to welcome Shinya Azuma and looks forward to this new chapter of collaboration.
