About the Artist / 아티스트 소개

Ziping Wang (b.1995, Shenyang) holds an MFA from the Pratt Institute, New York, and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Drawing on the visual languages of advertising and illustration, Ziping Wang’s paintings are inspired by the overwhelming experience of living within an attention economy in the digital era. Visually seductive food packaging often serves as the starting point for Wang’s colorful configurations that combine a wide array of references and styles, ranging from cartoonish renderings of food, traditional Chinese and Japanese decorative motifs, Old Master still lifes, geometrically patterned forms, and amorphous blobs of varying opacity. Wang’s paintings offer the mirage of a narrative and space in which dissociative fragments cohere, yet resist any further extraction of meaning. Paintings as decoys, that talk about something without talking about it, or by talking about something else.

Recent solo and group exhibitions include small talk, Unit London, (London, 2024), Boundless Reverie: Chinese Savoir Faire and Contemporary Art, K11 MUSEA (Hong Kong, 2024), Traces of Love and Timeless Adventure, Galerie Marguo at K11 Musea (Hong Kong, 2023) The Loudest Silence, Peres Project (Seoul, 2022). She recently collaborated with Louis Vuitton, creating the ‘Sweet tooth’ handbag, one of five artistic collaborations in the 5th edition of their Artycapucines Collection. Her works are in the collections of the ICA Miami, Zhuzhong Art Museum, Beijing, X Museum, Beijing, K11 Art Foundation, Hong Kong and The Consortium Museum in Dijon, France.

지핑왕(1995년 중국 선양 출생)은 뉴욕 프랫 인스티튜트에서 미술 석사 학위를, 로드아일랜드 스쿨 오브 디자인에서 학사 학위를 취득했다. 광고와 일러스트레이션의 시각적 언어에서 영감을 받은 지핑왕의 회화는 디지털 시대의 주목 경제 속에서의 압도적인 경험에서 출발한다. 그녀의 작품은 시각적으로 매력적인 식품 포장지를 출발점으로 삼아, 만화 같은 음식 이미지, 전통적인 중국 및 일본 장식 모티프, 고전 미술 정물화, 기하학적 패턴, 그리고 다양한 투명도의 무정형 물체 등 여러 참조와 스타일을 혼합한다. 지핑왕의 회화는 내러티브와 공간의 환영을 제공하며, 개별 조각들은 일관성을 유지하면서도, 더 깊은 의미를 추출하려는 시도를 거부한다. 그녀의 작품은 무언가에 대해 말하지 않으면서도 무언가를 이야기하거나, 다른 것을 이야기하면서 무언가를 표현하는 미끼와 같은 역할을 한다.

최근 개인전으로는 유닛 런던(런던, 2024)의 "small talk", K11 MUSEA(홍콩, 2024)의 "Boundless Reverie: Chinese Savoir Faire and Contemporary Art", K11 MUSEA(홍콩, 2023)의 "Traces of Love and Timeless Adventure"가 있으며, 단체전으로는 서울 페레스 프로젝트(2022)에서 열린 "The Loudest Silence" 등이 있다. 최근에는 루이비통과 협업하여 ‘스위트 투스’ 핸드백을 제작했으며, 이는 아티카푸신스 컬렉션의 5번째 에디션에서 5명의 예술가와 함께한 작품 중 하나이다. 그녀의 작품은 마이애미 ICA, 베이징의 주중 미술관, X 미술관, 홍콩 K11 아트 파운데이션, 그리고 프랑스 디종의 르 콘솔티움 미술관 등의 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.
